When we take the time to reflect on who God is, we will begin to see our lives and circumstances in the light of His glory. God is so worthy of my adoration. And when I remind myself of His attributes, it makes whatever problem I might be facing appear so small in the light of His greatness.
What does it mean to “Adore‘?
Adore – to honor and admire profoundly and respectfully, implying love and stressing the notion of an individual and personal attachment; to worship or honor as a deity or as divine; to show devoted deferential honor to : regard as worthy of great honor.
When we adore God, we give Him our wholehearted devotion. It’s not about making requests of Him, but it’s about giving Him all of our affection. To adore Him is to love Him more than all of the pleasures this world has to offer.
“…for your love is better than wine” (Songs 1:2)
“More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus
my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ.” (Phil. 3:8)
To adore Him is to focus on Him appropriately with faith in who He is. It is to see that He is more than enough, and that every obstacle and challenge of life is an opportunity for encounter with Him! To adore Him is to look into His eyes, to behold Him in all His glory.
“His eyes are like doves beside streams of water, bathed in milk, sitting beside a full pool.” (Songs 5:12)
Bob Hartley puts it this way:
“Adoration or “Face to Face” prayer is loving and magnifying the Lord above all else and in every circumstance and season of life. It is setting our eyes on the prize of knowing Christ Jesus and delighting in who He is. A person in love with God can not be stopped. Adoration is about falling in love with Him and giving Him the love He is due!”
One of the tools that I use to help me to reflect on who God is the Adoration Prayer Guide. This handy tool uses the ABC’s to walk through the many faces of God in our daily lives. Here is just a peek at some of what the letter “A” contains:
You are the ABUNDANTLY AVAILABLE God.
“God is our refuge and strength an ever present help in of trouble.” —Psalm 46:1
You are the APPROACHABLE God to all.
“Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to
such as these.”—Matthew 14:14
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God that if we ask according to His will, He hears us.” —1 John 5:14
You are the ATTENTIVE God who hears my prayers.
“For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are attentive to their prayer…” —1 Peter 3:12
