Valley – a low area of land between hills or mountains, typically with a river or stream flowing through it.
When they walk through the Valley of Weeping, it will become a place of refreshing springs. The autumn rains will clothe it with blessings. (Psalm 84:6)
Unlike the dry and parched desert, a valley is a place of vegetation and nourishment. Rivers of cool and refreshing water flow freely there, and tall, strong trees line the pathway up to the mountain. And although it is a place full of lush greens and flowing rivers which speak of life and vitality, it is often a place of great heartache and overwhelming pain. It is here where fear and doubt attempt to attach themselves to my wounded heart. Here in the valley, I sense God’s overwhelming presence carrying me though, yet at the same time, I am faced with my lack and my desperate need for more of Him.
God promises to bring us through the valley. We are often led here by His own hand, not to be taunted by it’s lushness and beauty. But He brings us here to prepare us for what lies ahead. It takes strength and endurance to climb, and here in the valley we are nourished, strengthened and equipped for the long journey that lies ahead.
What mountain is staring you in the face today? Perhaps illness, financial trouble, loss of a loved one? He sees your tears and He knows your pain. Beloved, He is with you in this valley. His living water flows freely there and He provides shade trees where you might lie down and rest when you grow weary. He sees the tears that you shed and He will restore your joy.
Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. (Psalm 30:5)
The desert is a much needed place, as it drives us to seek after God with everything within us. And the valley is the place where we are nourished, refreshed and strengthened for our journey. And remember Beloved, He goes with you. And He will not abandon you there. He will bring you through!
