“Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
He calmed the storm to a whisper
and stilled the waves.
What a blessing was that stillness
as he brought them safely into harbor! (Psalm107:28-30)
Storms. They are somewhat predictable. You often have time to prepare, to brace yourself. At other times they can come with such force that if you are not standing on solid ground, you might be shaken off of your foundation.
I hope you don’t mind if I share a personal story with you. It’s been told before on my blog, in bits and pieces. I hope that it will encourage you.
My family walked through a storm last year. We saw it coming for quite a while. We felt we might end up in this place. But even though we were somewhat prepared for the outcome, our faith was tested as we clung to God to bring hope in the midst of turmoil.
My husband lost his job in June of 2009. It put a very heavy strain on already stretched finances. We found ourselves getting further and further in debt. Our priority was to do everything in our power to keep our home. However, we had to come to the very painful decision to let our home go to short sale in the fall of 2010. We bought our “dream home” in 1994 when our first child was just three years old. We lived there for 16 years, raising our four children and doing extensive remodeling (thanks to my very talented carpenter husband).
We fought against that storm for over a year. But after a couple of failed promises of “new hope for homeowners” programs, we realized we were fighting against the storm and decided to simply “lean into it” and see where the wind would take us. We are thankful we were able to avoid foreclosure. Our house sold in less than a week and God has provided a very nice and spacious rental for our family. My husband is still unemployed, but God continues to provide “side jobs” and his unemployment has been extended for another few months. Praise the Lord!
I painted this picture last year, during the time we were in the midst of losing our home. It is titled “Embracing the winds of change”.
I believe God spoke to my heart very clearly about the storms and the winds they bring:
“I am bringing the winds of change. You have two choices. You can allow yourself to be caught up in fear and doubt and allow yourself to become immobilized, unable to move, OR you can embrace the winds of change. Will you choose to trust that I will guide your course?”
When the storms come, they often come with such force and strength that it will catch us off guard. But will we choose to trust Him? God does not promise that it will not be painful at times. But He does promise that if we will learn to trust Him in the storm, He will bring us through.
Are you facing a storm in your life? Trust the Lord. Lean into the wind and hear what the Spirit of God is saying to you in this season. Then, embrace it and allow the wind to carry you to the safe harbor.
