Discovering the Word: The Importance of Bible Study

I am honored to welcome this month’s Inspired blogger, Vanessa, as she shares her heart today!

One Sunday morning, Pastor Paul stood in front of a gathering of the congregation to announce a new adult bible study series. When he noted that there may be some who are not comfortable reading the bible, one woman piped up, “That’s just silly! Why aren’t they?!?” Yea, she was known for being a bit, er… blunt.

For many seasoned believers it can be difficult to imagine not being comfortable in His word. If you were raised in the church you probably grew up with scripture being spoken, read, taught, discussed and prayed over.

For others, though, scripture can seem intimidating and daunting. Cracking open a bible may bring anxiety and stress instead of the comfort and peace it holds. Reading unfamiliar passages (and even, perhaps, familiar ones) may produce more questions than answers.

It certainly doesn’t help that the enemy is ever-present in our world, working tirelessly to distort His word. With his help it has been skewed, warped, removed from context and misused time and time again. And it is so easy to give in to the misconceptions that abound and to feel that this giant book is just too big to tackle.

But we mustn’t let anything keep us from seeking God, and His word is what He has given us so we may know Him intimately.

In His word we see His mercy, grace, and steadfast love. He provides us the instruction and guidance to help us navigate the rough waters of life. He gives us all we need to trust in Him so we may share in His amazing gift of redemption.

It is through reading and studying and diving into scripture that we receive Jesus and the gift of salvation that He offers, for Christ is the living word.

“Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.”
(2 John 1:9)

I urge you to dive in and discover His word today.

If you are one who is feeling a bit timid, please know that God has given you the scriptures to not only free you from sin, but also to build a relationship with you. For you, I pray you will find His comforting embrace in His word, that He will bring you peace and understanding as you begin to study.

If you already are comfortable in His word, please work to be a blessing to others, to encourage others in their study, and to help them along their journey with Christ. For you, I pray you will continue to devote your time to being with Him, and that He would give you the words needed as you help guide those who may need a mentor or discerning friend.

I want to personally invite each of you to join me (and three of my good friends) for a new link-up coming in August. Each week we will have a scripture verse to study. Everyone will study the same verse using our GROW acronym as a guide:

G – (Greet) Welcome God’s presence into your study with prayer.
R – (Read) Read the verse a few times silently and aloud.
O – (Observe) Ask yourself what stood out as you read this verse.
W – (Write) Write out the verse, your observations and a prayer.

Then we will link-up our reflections on the verse, sharing what we’ve learned, encouraging each other in our study. Our prayer is that through this link up we can not only support one another as we dive into His word, but that we will truly grow in our faith and relationship with our Lord.

We are incredibly excited about this — and will be celebrating the kick-off with an amazing giveaway! For more information, please visit the information page here.

Many blessings to you as you seek Him in His word!

Thanks, Karrilee!!! I really hope this Link Up takes off. We are choosing scripture by topic, and will stay on one topic for a few weeks. We’re starting with Memorizing/Learning Scripture, thought it was appropriate to first look at what God says about learning His word and why it’s important. :) So excited!!!

Oh the new link-up sounds awesome and can’t wait. I also love your words here today, Vanessa. I grew up in church and was very comfortable being taught the words but studying it for myself was very scary. I was so worried that I might mis understand it and do something wrong. Over the last 3 years I learned to love the word and allow God to guide me.

I know you’ve heard me say it before, and it’s a topic that is so dear to my heart — there are so many Christian leaders/pastors/etc who have unknowingly become the wolves we are warned about in Acts 20:29. They teach the false gospel and skew His word into something it’s not. It’s so important to read, study, and listen to His word with a discerning heart, praying for His guidance and His understanding for you :) Love seeing how God has helped you these past few years, friend! Love you tons!!!

I hope you can, too, Christina. This is a project borne out of our mutual excitement over Intentional Blogger :) Praying this link up is a blessing to folks! Hope all is well with you – we need to get the #intentionalblogger group chatting again on twitter :) It’s been pretty quiet!

I love LOVE this! Way to promote our link-up too!

I grew up in the church AND I loved reading the Bible out loud in youth group. BUT reading on my own has always been a little intimidating for me. I wonder if I’m reading it correctly and if I’m reading the right verses for today…so much doubt! There is so much comfort in God’s word…so much instruction…and correction…and love….and hope. Satan will use anything to keep us from it!

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful heart and words! You blessed me this morning (and well…every morning!)

Ah, Kelsey! I’m just glad Barbie was so gracious enough to let me use her space to share our link up! Thank you, Barbie!!! :)

Thankful every day that He crossed our paths, friend! Looking forward to all the hard work and prayers to finally come to fruition… praying we keep our hearts and minds on Him always as we lead others in His word, too :)

Vanessa, from a still somewhat new believer and one who did not grow up on scripture, this blessed me so. I do find the Bible a bit hard to tackle at times and can find myself getting discouraged from what I do not understand but I also know how much His word has transformed my life so I don’t give up. I’m thankful for wonderful friends who help me to grow in His word. I was blessed when Barbie shared a post series on Songs of Solomon to help me along in my study. I’m SO grateful to her! Your link up sounds wonderful! Thank you for all you do to encourage others. Both you and Barbie are a blessing.

Beth – I’m right there with ya! I still consider myself a fairly new believer, having only received faith 8 years ago. I remember very vividly how hard it was to get started in study. I hope you’ll enter our giveaway – the resources in it should be a blessing to anyone in their study, but especially to someone who may still just be starting out :) I have a post with resources for newer Christians somewhere in my post archives, if you’re interested I’ll hunt it down :)
